Formerly the British Madurai Club, the Heritage Madurai offers a soothing oasis in this busy city. Recently beautifully restored, modernised and extended, the property now offers 72 gorgeous rooms including 35 villas in 17 acres of lush green gardens.
Heritage Madurai, with its warm hospitality and distinct architecture, opens its doors to a majestic city of culture and tradition; Madurai, the cradle of Sangam literature. Bask in the luxurious comfort of Heritage Madurai, a combination of old world charm and modern luxuries which will satisfy the demands of the most discerning travelers.
The hotel embodies a group of pillared pavilions embracing three internal courtyards shaded by overhanging pitched roofs. The central structure of the Old Madurai Club was originally conceptualized by Sri Lanka’s eminent architect, Geoffrey Bawa. It was designed in a way that allowed materials and resources from in and around Madurai to be utilized in its creation. Thus it was constructed with honey coloured granite from the Nagamalai Hills, stone slabs from an abandoned textile mill, 18th century columns salvaged from derelict homes and Chettinad doors. There’s an old temple cart, which hides the source of a gurgling fountain. In total, Heritage is an architectural masterpiece.
Rooms at the Heritage Madurai have wooden floors, wooden furniture, white linens and Indian rugs with gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape and forest. All rooms have air-conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and modern amenities to include coffee maker, the internet, minibar, cable TV and in room safe. The villas each have a private open air plunge pool and sun deck.
