Rhino calf – Very rare

Jamuna, the mother along with her calf at Manas National Park on 25th July 2013. Jamuna is among the three hand raised female rhinos translocated to Manas National Park from CWRC, which gave birth a baby, a success story of rhino translocation in India.
Guwahati’s Manas National Park (MNP) had its first rhino calf since 2014 when a female rhino gave birth to her second calf. The rhino, Jamuna, gave birth to the last calf born there, three years ago. Jamuna was rehabilitated to MNP in 2010, after being rescued from the Kaziranga National Park floods in 2004. MNP officials are elated, and take this as a sign that the rehabilitation programmes being carried out are effective. They claimed that they expected a few more births over the coming months.
Years of the armed insurgency had destroyed the national park between 1988 and 2001 and had wiped out its population.
